Google gave a new name to its Project Starline at its annual I/O 2025 developers conference and also introduced new features for it. Google Project Starline will now be called Google Beam. This new platform allows users to connect through a 3D experience, where 2D video streams are converted to 3D i.e., 2D videos can be converted to 3D during video calls. Beam aims to provide a more natural, eye-to-eye, and real-depth communication experience, especially for professional or enterprise users. It uses Google Cloud and Google's AI capabilities.
Key Features of Google Beam
Multi-angle webcam capture: Beam captures the user from different angles using multiple cameras.
AI-powered 3D processing: Google's AI merges these video streams to create a 3D light field display.
Precise head tracking: The platform includes head tracking with millimeter-level accuracy and a rate of 60 fps.
AI Volumetric Video Model: This technology gives 2D video a 3D experience that can be viewed from any angle. This makes it easier to read eye contact and subtle gestures.
The journey from Project Starline to Beam
Google first introduced Project Starline at Google I/O 2021. Its purpose was to show users in 3D in real size, including natural eye contact and spatial audio, although this project could not fully enter the market, but the same technology has now been redesigned as Google Beam.
Google plans to add real-time translation feature (speech translation) to Beam in the future. This feature is being made available in Google Meet from today, which will make multi-language communication easier. Google, in collaboration with HP, will launch the first Google Beam devices for select customers by the end of this year.
