New Delhi [India], October 7 (ANI): Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Tuesday condemned the incident where a lawyer attempted to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, terming it a "disrespect to the Constitution of India."
"This amounts to disrespecting the Constitution of India...I condemn this incident. The lawyers who threw an object should be booked under the Atrocity Act," Athawale told ANI.
Lawyer Rakesh Kishore, who attempted to hurl a shoe at the CJI, invited criticism from several political leaders.
Earlier today, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara condemned the incident, calling it an "insult" to the office and the Constitution.
Speaking with reporters, Parameshwara said that the action should have been taken against the lawyer who attempted to stage a show at the CJI.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut claimed the incident was not just about the CJI but a broader reflection of the current political climate, where those in power disregard the Constitution and their followers resort to such acts."The shoe has not been thrown or attempted to be thrown at CJI BR Gavai, but rather it was an attempt to throw the shoe at the Constitution of India. The people in power are not ready to follow the Constitution of India, and their followers are doing these kinds of things," Raut said.
Meanwhile, Rakesh Kishore said that he does not regret his action.
Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, Kishore said that he was hurt by the CJI's remarks while dismissing a plea seeking restoration of the structure of Lord Vishnu in the Javari temple in Khajuraho.
Telangana Jagruthi President K Kavitha also condemned the incident.
Praising the CJI's demeanour in handling the situation, she said that Justice Gavai's reaction shows the "solid base" of the Indian justice system.
Kavitha told ANI, "It's a very unfortunate development, and I don't think that should have ever happened. But I also saw how the CJI has reacted, which speaks volumes about the solid base on which the Indian justice system is thriving so far, and I hope it will continue to do so." (ANI)
