A Mumbai court has strongly criticized actress Malaika Arora for deliberately avoiding court proceedings in connection with a 2012 altercation involving actor Saif Ali Khan at a luxury hotel. The court stated that Arora was fully aware of her obligation to testify as a witness but continued to sidestep her legal responsibilities.
In light of her repeated absences, the court has given her one final opportunity to appear and warned that a non-bailable warrant will be issued if she fails to do so.
The warning follows Arora’s failure to attend a scheduled court appearance on April 29, despite a bailable warrant previously being issued to compel her presence. The court expressed frustration over her continued non-compliance, noting that although her legal representative was present, Arora herself did not show up. The presiding officer, Chief Judicial Magistrate K. S. Zanwar, remarked that her absence seemed deliberate, emphasizing that she was consciously evading the judicial process.
The incident in question occurred on February 22, 2012, at a five-star hotel in Mumbai. Malaika Arora was among a group of celebrities dining with Saif Ali Khan when an alleged physical confrontation took place. The court had earlier issued a bailable warrant on February 15 after Arora ignored the initial summons. When she failed to comply yet again, the same warrant was re-issued on April 8.
The court has now adjourned the matter until July 9 and has clearly stated that Arora must be present for the hearing. Should she fail to appear once more, a non-bailable warrant—meaning she could be arrested without the option of bail—will be issued against her.
The case stems from a complaint lodged by Iqbal Mir Sharma, a non-resident Indian businessman. According to police accounts, Sharma confronted Saif and his group over their loud and disruptive behavior. In response, Saif allegedly assaulted Sharma, breaking his nose. Sharma also accused Saif and his companions of physically attacking his father-in-law, Raman Patel.
At the time of the altercation, Saif was joined by his wife, Kareena Kapoor; her sister, Karisma Kapoor; Malaika Arora; Amrita Arora; and several male friends. Saif, however, has defended himself by claiming that Sharma provoked the group by making offensive remarks and verbally insulting the women present, which led to the altercation.
The charges filed against Saif Ali Khan, Shakeel Ladak, and Bilal Amrohi include Section 325 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to causing grievous hurt through assault.
