A 38-year-old woman was brutally assaulted outside a mosque in Karnataka’s Davanagere district after being summoned there over a domestic dispute allegedly linked to accusations of an “illicit affair," according to media reports.

The incident, captured on video, has sparked public outrage and led to the arrest of six men.

The attack took place outside the Jama Masjid in Tavarekere village of Channagiri taluk, where the victim, Shabina Banu, was allegedly called by mosque members following a complaint filed by her husband, Jameel Ahmed Shameer, said a report by India Today.

According to Shabina, she was summoned along with her relative Nasreen (32) and a man named Fayaz after her husband objected to their presence at their home.

In her complaint, she said that on April 7, Nasreen had visited her home, and the two women had gone on a short trip to a nearby hill in Bukkambudi. Later, Fayaz also came to the house. When Jameel returned and found both Nasreen and Fayaz present, he reportedly went to the mosque authorities and filed a complaint.

India Today further reported that Shabina, a house help by profession, alleged that after they were called to the mosque, a group of men attacked her with sticks, pipes, and clubs.

She was also nearly struck with stones, in what she described as an attempt to kill her. The video of the attack, which surfaced online, showed her being assaulted in broad daylight while others looked on.

Following the circulation of the video and public outrage, police acted swiftly and arrested six men identified as Mohammad Niyaz, Mohammad Gauspeer, Chand Basha, Inayat Ullah, Dastagir, and Rasool, noted the media report.

All six were named in Shabina’s formal complaint lodged on April 11.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the case. Police sources said that the charges were registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those related to assault and attempted murder.

Authorities have confirmed to India Today that further investigation is underway and more arrests may follow if others are found to have been involved.
