Ruben Amorim has no regrets about taking up the challenge of becoming manager of . The Portuguese coach believes he is now at the top of his profession - despite being unable to arrest a slide down the table that's threatening to leave United with their worst finish in 50 years.
Amorim admitted honestly that he did start to question his decision to accept the opportunity to replace Erik ten Hag in November rather than wait until the end of the season ahead of the trip to . But he now reckons all the pain will be worth the gain once he has put his mark on the squad he inherited.
Amorim said: “No regrets, not in this moment. If you had asked me four months ago, with all the problems, maybe I would have felt stronger about starting at the beginning of the season.
“But today, I have a feeling that this is something that is going to help us in the future. We are suffering a lot here. There’s a lot of frustration because of the suffering.
“But I feel that, in this moment, maybe because it’s near the end (of the season), that this is the most important time for the next few years. We are going to use all the information to prepare better for the next few years.

“So no regrets. I think this is the top of what a coach can achieve, so I have no regrets at all.” Amorim has won just six of his 22 Premier League games in charge as he takes his men to the Vitality Stadium.
But the team he described as being the worst in United’s history a few weeks ago can still rescue their season by winning the and qualifying for the . United travel to Spain to face Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the semi-final on Thursday night.
Amorim remains wedded to a three-at-the-back formation that his players have struggled to get to grips with. But while the United fans have backed him to the hilt, he accepts that he won’t be able to rely on that support if results don’t improve next season.
Amorim said: “I think the fans are special. I know the people understand what we are trying to do. But I also know that this moment, without results and sometimes without performances, the support of the fans will finish next season.

“I really appreciate that (the fans) but I also know that in the future it will finish if we don’t get results. Maybe I am the worst coach and we are the worst team because we had the worst results in the history of Manchester United. That is a fact. But I think we are improving, the way we play.
“So I have no regrets on joining Manchester. I have a lot of regrets in the week after we have lost a game. I have a lot of regrets in small things. I am always doubting what we did in the past while trying to improve but if you look at these last six months I should have a lot of regrets about us being better in certain moments.”
Asked about his critics in the media, Amorim added: “I have nothing to say. I don’t like to defend myself - and I cannot defend myself with these results. They say I have one idea how to play. People say I have one system but in that I can see ways that can adapt into different systems.
“I know it’s tough. I know it’s different. But I have nothing to say to the critics because if you look at the results they are right. I will let the results in the future speak for me.”
