West Ham crisis as Graham Potter fights to save his job after Chelsea humiliation

Send Push

Two games into the season and West Ham are already in a full-blown crisis.

The Hammers fans turned on their own players as they booed them off at half time and then walked out en masse during the second half as it turned into a complete humiliation. It leaves under-pressure West Ham boss Graham Potter already fighting to save his job as it turned toxic inside the London Stadium.

Chelsea were rampant as they ripped West Ham to shreds and, incredibly, four of their five goals came from inside the six yard box which only underlined the shambolic defending. West Ham’s new £18m keeper Mads Hermansen had another stinker and the reality was it could have been an even heavier defeat as normal service has resumed for both clubs.

Joao Pedro, Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez scored in a one-sided first half before Moises Caicedo and Trevoh Chalobah inflicted the damage after the break.

West Ham already look as if they will be facing another turbulent season as they look like relegation fodder having lost their season opener at newly-promoted Sunderland.

Potter has only been in charge for 21 games, has lost 11 and he already looks out of ideas. They were an utter shambles at the back and the squad is in desperate need of reinforcements. And you cannot really blame Potter on that front.

Chelsea, meanwhile, were sharp, dangerous and full of threat and, incredibly, they ran West Ham ragged even without star man Cole Palmer who injured a hamstring in the warm-up.

The newly-crowned Club World Cup champions drew a blank last week against Crystal Palace but were utterly rampant this time - and were given the freedom of the London Stadium.

Palmer’s last minute withdrawal could have easily derailed Enzo Maresca’s best-laid plans but in came Brazil wonder kid Estevao Willian who looks a superstar in the making.

Incredibly, Chelsea actually gave West Ham a head start when 18-year-old Estevao was given a harsh introduction on his first start in the Premier League. His flashy flick conceded possession.

West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta strode forward, unleashed a sensational long range effort which dipped, curled and swerved past Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez into the top corner after just six minutes.

On any other night it would have been a great story. Paqueta cleared in the summer of spot-fixing charges after a two-year FA investigation. Sanchez caught out again.

But Chelsea were level after just 15 minutes. Neto’s near post corner was flicked on by pint-sized full back Marc Cucurella and there was Pedro to head home from close range.

Chelsea were ahead after 23 minutes. Pedro found space on the right, swung over a cross and there was Neto steaming in unmarked at the back post to score.

Estevao fully redeemed himself after 34 minutes as he made an electric run down the right, cut the ball back and there was Fernandez to score from point blank range.

It got worse after half time. Hermansen’s weak punch presented the ball to Caicedo who hooked the ball in off the underside of the bar from 15 yards. Chalobah then completed the rout with another close range effort after West Ham failed to clear Neto’s corner.
