India is moving towards a major geological hazard. Scientists have warned that the Indian tectonic plate is now breaking into two parts, and this process could expose the country to devastating earthquakes in the future. According to the new study, this movement inside the earth is not just a light-hearted activity of the plates, but a serious process that can change the geography and life from the Himalayas to the Tibetan Plateau. This terrifying report states that the Indian plate is undergoing a unique process beneath the earth's surface, causing it to split into two pieces. Scientists say that if this process accelerates, a series of severe earthquakes can be seen in India in the coming years.
What is happening under the earth?
According to scientists, the Indian plate has been colliding with the Eurasian plate for about 60 million years. It is because of this collision that huge mountains like the Himalayas have been formed. But now a new process has started inside the Indian plate which is called delamination. In this process, the dense part of the plate ie its heavy part is sinking into the mantle inside the earth. This is creating cracks between the plates and it is breaking into two parts.
Delamination: What is the alarm bell?
Delamination is a process that shakes the stability of tectonic plates. When parts of a plate sink in, stress builds up on the surface. This stress can be so great that an earthquake can sometimes strike it. According to Simon Klemperer, a geologist at Stanford University, when there is intense pressure between two continents, cracks occur in the plates. And such cracks give rise to future earthquakes.
Himalayas and Tibet – on the danger line
This geological upheaval can have the greatest impact on the Himalayan region and the Tibetan Plateau. Where seismic activity is already high. Scientists have warned that both the frequency and intensity of earthquakes in these areas may increase due to delamination. According to Utrecht University geologist Douwe Hinsbergen, this process going on inside the earth is so deep that understanding it is becoming extremely challenging even for scientists. Yet the signs are clear – India's land is no longer the same as before.
Ab tak kya mila hai soshho mein?
This research was recently published in the 'American Geophysical Union'. According to:
- The Indian plate is on the verge of splitting into two parts
- A part of it is trapped in the earth's mantle
- This is causing cracks and stress in the areas above the plate
- This process will affect from the Himalayas to the Tibetan Plateau
- Large-scale earthquakes may occur in the future
Why is this process new?
Delamination is not a common tectonic movement. It is an internal rupture that breaks the plate from below, not above. Before this, scientists could only get signs of surface cracks, but now the cracks are occurring inside the plate itself. This means that what we thought about the structure of our earth and its strength is incomplete. Now there is a need to do more research on this process so that the future effects can be understood and managed in time.
What can happen?
- If the delamination accelerates, more major earthquakes may occur in India
- Seismic activity may increase in the Himalayas and North India
- Deep fissures can also be seen in the Tibetan Plateau
- Big changes are possible in India's geography
