Prostate cancer is a dangerous cancer that occurs in men. It is a serious type of cancer that affects many men around the world. Often it can prove fatal due to its late detection. Therefore, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated every year in the month of September, so that people can be made aware about it.
Along with creating awareness, it is also important to take care of some things in time so that one can protect oneself from this cancer. In such a situation, today in this article, we learn from Dr. Harshit Garg, Senior Consultant, Uro Oncosurgery, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Vaishali, about some lifestyle changes that can help men in protecting themselves from prostate cancer.
What does the doctor say?
Doctors say that prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men, especially those over the age of 50. Although age, family history and genetic risk play an important role in this, increasing evidence suggests that some changes in lifestyle can affect the development and progression of this disease. Let's know how men can protect themselves from this cancer-
Maintain a healthy weight
Being overweight or obese has been linked to a higher risk of aggressive prostate cancer. Excess fat, especially around the abdomen, can trigger inflammation and hormonal changes, which may promote cancer growth. A balanced diet and regular exercise are essential to keep weight under control.
Be physically active
Men who exercise regularly not only have improved heart health but may also reduce their risk of prostate cancer. Physical activity reduces insulin resistance, improves hormone balance and reduces inflammation. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming.
Eat more plant-based foods
Eating plant-based foods may help prevent prostate cancer. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes provides antioxidants and nutrients that protect cells from damage. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower contain compounds that may slow the growth of cancer cells. Lycopene-rich tomatoes have also been linked to better prostate health.
Eat less red and processed meat
Eating too much red and processed meat can increase your risk of cancer. So if you want to prevent prostate cancer, reduce your intake of these and replace them with lean proteins like fish, poultry or plant-based foods like beans and lentils.
Avoid high fat and sugary foods
Foods high in saturated fat and added sugar promote obesity and inflammation, which may increase the risk of prostate cancer. Therefore, adding healthy fats from nuts, seeds, olive oil, and avocados to your diet can be a safe option.
Quit smoking and stay away from alcohol
Smoking can make prostate cancer worse. Drinking alcohol in moderation or abstaining from it can reduce your risk of cancer and benefit your long-term health.
Get regular checkups
Timely and regular testing is very important to avoid any disease. Men who have a family history of prostate cancer should discuss testing options with their doctor earlier than the general population.
