A doctor who previously dismissed patients' accounts of near-death experiences had his life "completely changed" after experiencing the afterlife himself.

Dr Rajiv Parti, a former chief anesthesiologist at Bakersfield Heart Hospital, has recounted the terrifying and beautiful visions he experienced while on the operating table. His heart stopped due to complications from prostate cancer surgery in 2008 when he was 51.

He claimed to have seen himself undergoing emergency surgery before visiting his sister and mother at their home in New Delhi, India.

However, during a discussion on his YouTube channel about what happened next, he revealed: "I heard screams of pain and anguish. I was drawn in, as if on a moving pavement, to the edge of a flaming canyon. Smoke filled my nostrils, and with it the sickening odour of burning flesh. I knew then that I was on the lip of hell."

He alleged that a voice reprimanded him for his "materialistic" lifestyle and the Hindu man remembered pleading with God for forgiveness before seeing his father.

The situation then became much more serene, as John Burke, an author on near-death experiences, later disclosed. Speaking to , he said: "Then these two angels, that he said (Dr Parti) were angels from the bible (Michael and Raphael), which really confused him, take him through this tunnel like portal to this place of exquisite beauty and the presence of this God of light who is love."

John continued: "And Rajiv in the presence of God has a life review, and in the life review he sees the way, and this is typically how this life review goes, and it varies by unique individual, but usually, in the presence of God, they relive their entire lives in a 3D panoramic replay right before them."

This is when people's perception of time is allegedly transformed, and offering some insight, John explained: "That's exactly what near-death experiencers say, they say, I don't know if it was seconds or hours or days, time doesn't work the same way on the other side.

"Some of them say there was no time, or time stopped, but others say there was time, because things happened and things changed but you always had all the time you needed. And someone would say, well, it is past, present and future all at the same time."

Regarding the life review, people are purportedly shown that every act of kindness mattered, and they witness how it affected the other person and subsequently God then reveals the ripple effect from life to life.

Nevertheless, the individual also allegedly has to observe all the distressing moments in their life where they may not have behaved kindly.

Concerning Dr Parti's experience, John went on: "Rajiv is a Hindu and yet, the same God of light, same life review, and at another point, he later asks this God of light, 'Who are you Lord?'

"Out of the light steps a man in a robe with a gold sash and a beard and he says to him, 'I'm Jesus, your saviour.'

"Again, we are talking chief anaesthesiologist - so it changed his life completely. And he was very confused by it but what I like to point out is that God has always been the God of all nations."

After being spared from an untimely demise, Dr Parti relayed his experiences to his colleagues, only to have his account dismissed, much like he used to do with his patients.

He confessed that the experience left him rattled, leading him to question why he had spent so much of his life in pursuit of grander houses and flashier cars.

Subsequently, he resigned from his position in Bakersfield, sold off his luxury vehicles and mansion, and penned a book titled Dying to Wake Up: A Doctor's Voyage Into the Afterlife and the Wisdom He Brought Back.
