Former Barcelona B player Iker Fernandez Valderrama underwent emergency surgery to remove his spleen following a horror collision during a match. Valderrama was left in excruciating pain on the pitch after an opposing goalkeeper crashed into him near the halfway line.
The 23-year-old futsal player managed to briefly stand, clutching his left side, as his team-mates halted their protests against the goalkeeper's aggressive tackle to assist him. After being aided, Valderrama was stretchered off the pitch and rushed to hospital. There, it was confirmed that he had broken three ribs and suffered internal injuries necessitating the removal of his spleen.
The terrifying incident occurred just 20 seconds into the futsal match on Sunday, November 9, between home team Gasifred Atletico Ibiza and Union Africa Ceuti.
The away team's goalkeeper, Mario Gomes, who was filmed comforting Iker upon realising the extent of the damage caused, received a red card for his challenge outside of the penalty area.
The game ended with a 2-1 victory for Valderrama's team. However, the footballer remained in intensive care at Ibiza's Can Misses Hospital following his operation.
He is expected to be moved to a regular ward later on Monday as his recovery continues.
Valderrama, a former player for Barcelona B's futsal team, was in his fourth season with his current club after renewing his contract with them over the summer.
One supporter expressed his delight at the time of his contract renewal, stating: "An example of a player that gives everything in every game. Congratulations on your renovation. A top futsal player."
Another added: "Great player. He deserves this contract renewal."
Valderrama shared an image on his Instagram from his hospital bed, showing his team-mates holding up photos of him on their mobile phones, dedicating their home victory to him.
His club shared messages of support from other futsal teams on its social media platforms, including one from third division Ibiza side CD San Pablo.
The message read: "We send all our strength and support to Gasified player Iker, a companion in this sport. Swift recovery."
Another message from CD Ibiza Futsal stated: "We wish you a speedy recovery and send you lots of hugs."
