I added one ingredient to my porridge, and it is ten times better, adding a lovely creamy texture that I can't wait to experience again. Porridge is one of those easy and nutritious breakfast dishes that Brits love. It can be made in mere minutes, either using a microwave or by heating it in a pot over the stove. All you need is oats, milk and whatever you want to top it with. My porridge normally consists of just that: milk, oats and honey, sometimes adding a sliced banana.
But when I was making porridge for breakfast this week, I decided to experiment, as I often do with classic dishes in the kitchen. By adding a small bit of a kitchen staple, I really made my porridge into something delicious. Don't get me wrong, I like my porridge as it is. But I am open-minded when it comes to food, and I always like to discover how to elevate it. For example, I recently fried apples to add to my porridge, and the results were delicious. I have also made porridge with just peanut butter and jam, and thought it tasted amazing.
But this time, it was a small bit of butter that did the trick. I was inspired to do this after my above-mentioned apple test, as I fried the fruit in butter, which gave a lovely savoury taste to my usually sweet breakfast.
I had already measured out my oats and poured in the milk, stirring it over a medium heat on the stove. However, towards the start of the process. I also added a teaspoon of salted butter. I had block butter after making some soup the week before, using a recipe that required it.
So, I thought I should just toss it in to see what happened. The results were pretty impressive.
My porridge ended up being much creamier than it usually was. Plus, the salted butter was a good balance against the sweetness of the honey I added after.
Sometimes, I find honey to be a bit sickly sweet. However, the addition of salted butter made it taste richer and less aggressive, and perfectly complemented the creaminess of the oats.
I would really recommend trying this. But if you are dubious, then there are other things you can try. Other ingredients that can make your porridge creamier include heavy cream, Greek yoghurt and nut butters.
