A new sleeper train operator is aiming to completely transform travel across Europe by offering private, hotel style cabins at affordable prices that rival those of short haul flights. Nox, a Berlin based startup, has revealed plans to launch a continent wide network of overnight train services, targeting 100 cities by 2035. The company's first trains, however, are expected to begin service in 2027.
Unlike many existing sleeper services, Nox trains will feature fully private rooms, eliminating the need for passengers to share cabins with strangers, a common barrier to wider adoption of night train travel. The co-founders of the start-up say the goal is to create a practical, comfortable, affordable and more sustainable alternative to short haul flights.
Thibault Constant, co-founder of Nox said: "Sleeping while a train gets you across Europe is a great concept. But today people have to share their cabins with strangers, beds are tight, and it's often more expensive than air travel."
"We want to change that and make night trains an essential part of European travel."
Janek Smalla, fellow co-founder of Nox added: "Our room design allows us to fit more people into our trains than traditional operators can.
"This, paired with a strict focus on standardisation and operational excellence, will allow us to offer affordable fares on over 35 European routes."
Ticket prices are expected to start at about £69 for single cabins and around £130 for doubles, with onboard amenities such as food and drink, bike storage, and wheelchair accessibility.
All cabins on Nox trains will have two-meter beds, seating, and storage, and select rooms will even offer panoramic window views from the bed.
The service will include three cabin classes: single lofts, double lofts, and double vista rooms. Each is designed to accommodate one or two people without sharing with other passengers.
The routes will travel to several major cities, such as Paris, Milan, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Munich, Zurich, Brussels, Vienna, Stockholm, Warsaw, Budapest, and Rome.
