Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) and other agencies are set to transform areas surrounding Metro stations in Bhopal to ensuring smooth operation and accessibility.
According to MPMRCL sources, Bhopal Metro report has been submitted to various departments, including Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC), traffic police, town and country planning and urban administration and development department (UADD) for additional approvals.
The report looks into issues related to vehicular movement and pedestrians for each of the three dozen Metro station being developed under Phase I and Phase II of the project. "It has been meticulously planned, with multiple agencies involved in ensuring smooth operation and accessibility. Integrated planning includes provisions for bus ways, designated pick-and-drop zones, and multimodal transport connectivity," said a MPMRCL consultant.
These newly designed spaces can function as vital urban improvements to enhance road functionality and reduce traffic congestion, whilst ensuring efficient Metro access.
For instance, the intersection connecting MP Nagar and Bhopal railway station represents a crucial traffic point, experiencing substantial vehicle movement due to its location near business centres and transport hubs. Coordinating Metro station development with existing road infrastructure at these locations can substantially improve traffic flow.
Research regarding intersection modifications in Bhopal demonstrates the necessity of enhanced signal coordination, broader roadways and integrated transport options to reduce congestion.
Consider MP Nagar, a significant commercial centre, which regularly faces traffic congestion due to dense vehicle presence and limited road capacity. A strategically designed Metro station vicinity could feature dedicated bus stops, walker-friendly routes, and enhanced connectivity options for short distances, thereby decreasing private vehicle usage and improving traffic movement.
Bhopal railway station junction, which will have an underground Metro station, would benefit from improved coordination between Metro entry points and current road systems, minimising congestion.
