Kota: A 16-year-old boy from Katihar, Bihar, allegedly died by suicide in Kota late Monday night, becoming the 13th coaching student to die by suicide in the city this year. He was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room in the Talwandi area, under Jawahar Nagar police station limits.
Police said the boy, a Class 11 student, had recently arrived in Kota and enrolled in a coaching institute to prepare for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The incident marks the third student suicide in Kota in April alone. In 2024, a total of 17 coaching students reportedly died by suicide in the city.
Jawahar Nagar circle inspector Ramlaxman confirmed the incident, adding that the boy's identity was being withheld as he was a minor. No suicide note was recovered from the room, and the cause of the suicide is yet to be ascertained.
According to officials, the hostel caretaker alerted police after the boy did not respond to repeated knocks on his door. Police broke open the door and found him hanging.
The boy's uncle, who lives in Delhi, reached Kota Tuesday morning upon receiving the news. The body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered under Section 195 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS). Police said further investigation is underway to determine the reason behind the boy's extreme step.
