Raipur: Chhattisgarh Congress reiterated the demand for a CBI inquiry into the Durg rape-murder case, alleging police misconduct, and announced a Nyay Yatra and CM house gherao.

The party state President Deepak Baij stated on Friday that the party stands by the demand of the family members of the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Durg for a CBI inquiry, expressing solidarity with the victim's family. Baij, while addressing the media at the party's state headquarters in Raipur, reiterated the family's demand for a CBI inquiry into the "barbaric incident" in Durg.

Baij drew a parallel between the case and the ‘Nirbhaya' case of Delhi, stating that the victim's family suspects the involvement of multiple accused. "We visited the victim's house on April 10. The family members recounted their ordeal and expressed their lack of faith in the Special Investigation Team (SIT) or the state govt. They want a CBI investigation to ensure that everyone responsible, whether family members or outsiders, is punished," Baij conveyed, quoting the family.

Baij alleged police misconduct, accusing them of torturing the victim's elderly grandfather and aunt, and pressuring male relatives to confess to the crime. He likened this to an attempted cover-up, similar to the Lohardih case.

The Congress has demanded the immediate removal of the Durg Superintendent of Police (SP) and the resignation or sacking of the state's home minister.

Baij also mentioned that the family has refused the compensation of approximately Rs 2.5 lakh, emphasizing their pursuit of justice.

He questioned the police investigation's direction, stating that they are "yet grappling in the dark". While the police arrested the girl's uncle on charges of rape and murder, Baij cited the family's belief in his innocence, highlighting his affection and respect for his niece.

To demonstrate solidarity, the Chhattisgarh Congress will conduct a Nyay Yatra from April 18 to 21. The 45-km march will commence in Durg and conclude with a gherao of the Chief minister's residence in Raipur on April 21.

Prior to the Nyay Yatra, a Congress delegation led by Leader of Opposition Dr Charandas Mahant will meet the Governor of Chhattisgarh. "We have requested an appointment with the Raj Bhawan for April 13," Baij said.
