'Hollywood and Bollywood both use the same techniques of mind manipulation'

Philip Noyce recently spoke about how Hollywood has been in crisis mode following the pandemic and the writers' strike. He says that he was inside the machine in Hollywood when the studio system was in its hey-day. He says,"If I made a bad film, they made it a success all around the world. If I made a good film, they made it an even bigger success. But the bad and the good, they could convince the audience to come and see, no matter what. The publicity machine was stronger than ancient Rome. It controlled the hearts and the minds. Hollywood and Bollywood both use the same techniques of mind manipulation."

Philip also shares how his experience with popular films enabled him to create financially successful independent films on much lower budgets while still attracting audiences. He says, "I prefer independent cinema because when I make an independent film, I get what we call a final cut, meaning nobody can dictate how the film will be edited or where the music will be. It’s just me. Whereas with a studio film, you know, the studio has the final cut."
