Chaotic passengers are becoming a familiar problem on flights, where alcohol is often the sole cause of these disturbances. While most flights go off without a hitch, incidents like the one on a flight from Manchester to Rhodes on April 3 is an example of how quickly things can go wrong.
The flight was disrupted to such an extent that it led to a delay in landing and required intervention from the police.
The trouble began when flight attendants confiscated two bottles of alcohol from a male passenger and refused to serve him more drinks. Ater the man created nuisance on the flight and began to show rowdy behaviour, which the witnesses described as rapidly turning aggressive.
As the plane started descending towards Rhodes, the passenger stood up and ignored repeated requests to return to his seat.In order to restrain him, flight attendants used spare seat belts, but he broke free, forcing the pilot to circle the island instead of landing immediately.
What happened on the flight?
In video footage of the incident, passengers and crew can be seen trying to manage the situation. One crew member can be heard shouting, “Sit down, now!” Meanwhile, the man reportedly squared up to the crew, and seemed as if he was likely to provoke a physical confrontation.
A passenger who saw the disturbance explained, “The flight was going completely fine until the cabin crew came up to me and my partner at the front of the plane and asked us if we were traveling together and if we could be separated because a little girl needed to come down to the front of the plane with her dad because a man was being disruptive.” The witness went on to say that the man kept getting out of his seat and that the crew had to raise their voices to get him to sit down.
During the flight, the crew had warned passengers that anyone drinking Duty-Free alcohol would face police action. After finally landing in Rhodes, local police boarded the plane and escorted the disruptive passenger off.
Airline takes strict measures
Ryanair, the airline company, issued a statement confirming that the crew had contacted authorities before landing due to the passenger's disruptive behaviour. The airline restated its strict zero-tolerance policy, saying, “The aircraft was met by local police upon arrival at Rhodes Airport, and this passenger was removed, as reported by The People. Ryanair has a strict zero-tolerance policy towards passenger misconduct and will continue to take decisive action to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all.”
