'I didn't talk to Rishabh Pant ... ': Ravi Bishnoi breaks silence on not bowling to MS Dhoni

Gautam Gambhir 's audacious field placement against MS Dhoni in an IPL 2016 match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant (RPSG) is still fresh in the minds of cricket fans. Gambhir placed fielders at slips, short leg, and silly point, leaving Dhoni with limited freedom while facing spinner Piyush Chawla.

The move paid off handsomely, as the wicketkeeper-batter managed to score only 8 runs off 22 balls. In a similar vein, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane attempted to subdue Dhoni by bringing on Varun Chakaravarthy during the recent IPL 2025 match against CSK. That move also paid rich dividends, with the 43-year-old cricketer dismissed for just 1 run after facing four balls.

These instances make it even harder to understand Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant 's decision to not use wrist-spinner Ravi Bishnoi as a weapon against Dhoni last night. The veteran smashed an unbeaten 26 off 11 balls, helping CSK defeat LSG by five wickets. Dhoni enjoyed great success against pacers Avesh Khan and Shardul Thakur in the final overs, smashing them to all parts of the ground.

Historically, the former India captain has struggled against wrist-spinners in the IPL, scoring 672 runs at a strike rate of 110.16, while being dismissed 21 times. Right-arm wrist-spinners like Bishnoi have been particularly effective, accounting for 19 of those dismissals, with Dhoni managing 602 runs at a strike rate of 106.92 against them.

Bishnoi has held his own against the wicketkeeper-batter, conceding just 11 runs in 10 balls and dismissing him once. His variations could have posed a challenge for Dhoni and potentially swung the match in LSG's favour.

"I didn't really talk to Pant about it, but I went to the wicket a couple of times and I think he had plans in place he wanted to execute. In such situations, the captain is better placed—and he is the wicketkeeper too—so he understands things better. According to me, he took the decision he thought was better," said Bishnoi, who conceded 18 runs and picked up two wickets in three overs.

Pant admitted he had considered bringing Bishnoi into the attack multiple times. "There were many instances where I thought about bowling him, but I discussed with other players and thought, 'Let's take it deeper,'" he stated.

CSK have now registered two wins in IPL 2025, while LSG have suffered their third loss of the season.
