OpenAI says Google, Apple and Microsoft data dominance are making it difficult for company to compete

Send Push
OpenAI has raised alarms with European Union (EU) antitrust regulators over what it views as potentially anti-competitive practices by major technology firms, including Alphabet 's Google , Microsoft and Apple , a report has said. The world’s largest startup took its concerns to the office of EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera in a September 24 meeting, highlighting the “difficulties” it faces “in competing with entrenched companies.”

Citing official notes from the meeting, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI pressed watchdogs to intervene to “avoid the lock-in of customers by large platforms.”

What OpenAI said about Google, Microsoft data dominance
OpenAI specifically noted concerns across various digital markets, from cloud computing to app development. The company stressed that "access to key data is essential" for preserving competition in the AI market.

A person familiar with the meeting told the publication that Google, Microsoft and Apple were the primary companies targeted by the ChatGPT-maker during the session.

The complaint, though not yet a formal antitrust filing, highlights the increasing competitive friction between AI pioneers and the established Big Tech giants, the report said, adding that an escalation of this warning could create significant tensions, particularly as the AI industry rapidly evolves and as OpenAI realigns its partnership with Microsoft.

An OpenAI spokesperson referenced an earlier blog post in which the company highlighted issues around AI competition and bottlenecks at the input and distribution levels, particularly against Google.

Competition with Microsoft heats up
Meanwhile, the concerns come at a critical time for Microsoft, which has invested heavily in OpenAI and rapidly integrated AI into its product lineup. Despite their partnership, the two companies are increasingly competing for customers. Microsoft’s Copilot app is a direct rival to OpenAI’s market-leading ChatGPT, and OpenAI has been making deeper inroads among businesses.
