NEW DELHI: People from all walks of life, the majority of them women, joined a protest rally organised by the Northern Angami Women Organisation (NAWO) in Kohima on Saturday, condemning the brutal attempted rape and assault of a mother of four children.

Held at Razhu Point, the rally saw widespread participation and solidarity, with shops and business establishments across the state capital remaining shut during the protest.

The accused, a 19-year-old man from a village under Kohima district, allegedly attacked the woman on July 16 near Botsa village as she was returning from her field. According to a memorandum submitted by NAWO to the deputy commissioner of Kohima, the accused waylaid the woman, assaulted her with a knife, and attempted to rape and kill her.

The victim suffered multiple stab wounds on her neck, arm, and behind her ear before a passerby intervened. The accused then fled but was later apprehended by local youths and handed over to the police. He is currently in judicial custody.

Protestors carried placards demanding the severest punishment under the law and marched to the deputy commissioner's office to submit their memorandum. In their representation, NAWO described the incident as a premeditated and brutal crime.

NAWO also urged the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and cautioned against granting bail to the accused. “This cowardly and inhumane act is not just an assault on one woman but an attack on the safety and dignity of all women,” the memorandum stated.

They expressed concern over the rising trend of acquittals in crimes against women and emphasised the need for a strong, effective criminal justice system.

NAWO demanded strict legal action, protective measures for the victim and her family, and reiterated its faith in law enforcement, while insisting that justice must be both visible and swift.
