The Indian embassy in Cambodia on Saturday issued an advisory for Indian nationals, asking them to avoid travelling to the Cambodia-Thailand border areas due to ongoing clashes between the two Southeast Asian nations.
"In view of the ongoing clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are advised to avoid traveling to the border areas," the embassy said in a statement posted on X.
The embassy, located in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, also shared emergency contact information for Indian nationals. "In case of any emergency, Indian nationals may approach the Embassy of India, Phnom Penh at +855 92881676," it said.
This advisory follows a similar message from the Indian embassy in Thailand on Friday, which urged Indian travellers to check local updates before visiting tourist sites in affected areas.
Clashes between Cambodia and Thailand continued for a third day on Saturday. Cambodia’s defence ministry reported that 13 people had died in the fighting so far, which includes eight civilians and five soldiers, and said 71 others were wounded, news agency AFP reported.
The Thai army said five soldiers were killed on Friday, bringing Thailand’s death toll to 20, including 14 civilians and six soldiers.
The total death toll from the recent conflict now stands at 33, which is higher than the 28 people killed during the previous round of fighting between 2008 and 2011.
The conflict, which began on Thursday, has involved jets, tanks, artillery, and ground troops. The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss the situation.
More than 138,000 people have been evacuated from Thailand’s border areas, while over 35,000 people have been displaced in Cambodia.
