The Wisconsin state fair remained closed Sunday after relentless downpours triggered dangerous flash flooding over the weekend, submerging roads, damaging homes, and bringing parts of the Milwaukee area to a standstill.
Milwaukee saw its second-wettest day on record Saturday, with 5.74 inches of rain falling in the evening. By Sunday morning, totals had risen to 6.69 inches. Radar estimates showed some communities received over 10 inches in a short period.
“Attention Fairgoers! The State Fair Park is closing. Please use caution as you make your way to the nearest exit as safely as possible and follow the directions of the Fair Park staff and police as you exit,” officials said in a Facebook post announcing the closure Saturday night.
Earlier in the evening, officials said the Lynyrd Skynyrd concert planned for Saturday night was canceled due to severe weather and flooding.
Numerous roads across the region were blocked by rushing water, creating dangerous conditions for drivers.
“This is some unprecedented flooding that we have seen across the Milwaukee area, radar estimating over 10 inches in a handful of communities and that’s in a fairly short period of time,” FOX 6 News Milwaukee Meteorologist Stephanie Barichello told FOX Weather.
Alderman Peter Burgelis said 911 centers were inundated with calls related to the flooding and urged residents to remain on the line as calls were being answered in the order received.
Elsewhere, the central Plains were also hit by severe weather over the weekend, leaving at least one person dead in Nebraska.
