Bhopal, India — The scorching summer heat is set to intensify in Madhya Pradesh as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert starting April 16, particularly for the Gwalior and Chambal divisions. While some regions experienced scattered rainfall over the past few days, clear skies and rising temperatures are now expected across the state.

Weather Split: Rain in the East, Heat in the West

On Monday, districts including Seoni, Chhindwara, Singrauli, Balaghat, Pandhurna, Betul, and Rewa saw overcast conditions and occasional light showers. However, starting Tuesday, most parts of the state are forecasted to have clear skies, marking the beginning of a sharp temperature rise.

The IMD confirmed that heatwave conditions will commence on April 16, with hot and dry winds (loo) expected to sweep across Indore, Gwalior, Ujjain, and Chambal divisions. Eastern districts like Shahdol, Anuppur, Dindori, Mandla, Balaghat, Seoni, and Chhindwara may still receive light rain today.

Temperatures Soar Across Key Cities

Here are the latest temperature readings from Monday:

  • Ratlam: 42°C (highest in the state)

  • Shajapur & Dhar: 41°C

  • Khandwa: 40.5°C

  • Narmadapuram: 40°C

  • Ujjain: 41°C

  • Bhopal: 39.5°C

  • Indore: 39.7°C

  • Gwalior: 37.5°C

  • Jabalpur: 36.8°C

With temperatures projected to cross 40°C in several regions, the IMD warns that 11 districts are on heatwave alert. The conditions are expected to persist through April 17 and 18, with increased risk of dehydration, heatstroke, and discomfort for vulnerable groups.

Residents Urged to Take Precautions

The state’s health and disaster management authorities have advised people to:

  • Stay indoors during peak afternoon hours

  • Keep hydrated and avoid strenuous activities outdoors

  • Use protective clothing and headgear when stepping out

  • Look after the elderly, children, and outdoor workers

While temperatures will dominate the weather narrative this week, some isolated light showers in the east may provide brief relief. However, the overall trend points to hotter and drier days ahead.
